Who is Maganda?

Maganda is the good shoe company. Maganda is about doing business in a way it creates sustainable value for all. Together we create beautifully designed shoes that are made to last and brought to you as consciously as we can.

How did it start?

It was 2015. Loes was visiting the beautiful Philippines for a few weeks for an impact measurement project for Lendahand, the social crowdfunding platform. Through Lendahand you can lend money to a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) in upcoming countries. The first country was the Philippines. Loes had a wonderful time interviewing SMEs funded through Lendahand, especially with a group of shoe makers. While the impact of access to affordable finance was clear, most SMEs felt that there was more impact to be made: by working together to develop more sustainable products that meet the demands of other markets. A few brainstorms, some visits and lot’s of shoes later Maganda was born!

What does Maganda mean?

Maganda means beautiful in Tagalog, the language spoken in the Philippines. The name came from a nice talk and some serendipity!

Is Maganda an NGO?

Maganda is not an NGO and not ‘just’ a company, it’s a for-purpose-profit-company. We’re on a mission to create a new type of business that creates value for everyone and everything involved. Where making a healthy return enables us to make more positive impact: investing in more sustainable raw materials or investing in solar panels so the shoe maker’s communities can benefit from clean energy. Just some ideas.

Where are Maganda’s made?

Maganda’s are made in small-scale family owned workshops in the Philippines. The workshops are in Liliw, a small and lively town about 3 hours south from Manilla. The town is famous for making shoes. If you plan to visit the Philippines and would like to take a look, just let us know and we will be happy to show you around!

Is Maganda Fairtrade Certified?

The short answer is no we are not. Because our whole reason of being is around having a direct connection with the people who make our shoes. We understand the value of Fairtrade for larger, multinational companies who do not know who actually make/grow their products. For them, (Fairtrade) certification is a credible starting point for a more sustainable supply chain. We do not need an independent party verifying that Magandas are made according to a set of requirements. We know they are. Maganda’s shoe makers make high quality products that are made to last. They are not suppliers, they are partners. They also receive a better price for Maganda shoes: twice as much as they would normally receive.

Further, we cooperate on making their workshops more sustainable in a way their community benefits as well: e.g. investing together in solar panels which can provide clean energy for the workshops and the community.

Does Maganda have a policy to minimise negative impact on the environment?

Doing things differently so people & planet profit is embedded in Maganda’s business model. Therefore you will not find an explicit policy on environmental criteria to which Maganda’s value chain players should comply: Maganda is the value chain. To give you an idea of what is embedded in our core environmental values:

  • Minimize waste and using waste streams: shoe makers are re-using waste at their workshops. What’s more, your shoes are send in upcycled packaging, labels are made from recycled cardboard and you can send your shoes back so the material will continue to live.
  • Energy usage: Maganda’s are mostly hand-made. The sturdy stitching is partly done using sewing machines, that is about the only electricity that is being used during the manufacturing process. Some of the workshops already have solar powered energy, for others we hope we can make this available soon, not only for the workshop but also for the benefit of the wider community.
  • Raw materials: This is a continuous improvement journey. What is better, making sure we can continuously re-use existing material or using natural material such as Better Cotton? What about the land use issues that come with using natural materials? Any land used for producing cotton cannot be used for growing food. Also synthetic material might last a lot longer and might have a lower environmental impact than cotton. Currently the shoemakers are experimenting with using coconut fibre, which is a waste product from coconut plantations. We are also looking into upcycled material from discarded clothing and fishing nets. We are working with different (local) partners to assess where the most impact is coming from and where the most gains are to be made.
  • Transport: In the future your Maganda’s will travel by electrical vehicles using only renewable energy. Take a look at ImagineCargo, it is not as impossible as you might think it is! At the moment, we do compensate the CO2 emissions from the transport and we work with a Social Enterprise for the last-mile delivery of your Magandas.  Step by step we go!
